tmj

I had an exam including ct scan of my jaw by Dr. Reda Fattah in Boca Raton, Fl. I have popping on the left side of my jaw and some clicking on the right. I've had tmj for many years, but it is now that it has flared up. The trouble is to treat it properly the Dr.s office said it would cost roughly $4-5,000. He made an impression using some kind of soft material and asked me to open my mouth. Miraculously, there was no popping or clicking at all. He said this appliance would re-align my jaw. It was wonderful, except I can't afford it (1,200 for the appliance alone) I do have a bite guard, but when I wear it I still pop and click. It really does nothing. What I am asking, I guess is, are there any exercises or simple treatments I can do on my own that could help alleviate some of the popping. By the way, I really have no pain from this conditiion--only some tightness . Thank you for your consideration.

Jaw popping and splints
by: Dr. Spainhower

Hello TMJ jaw popper,

You have a slipping disc that makes the popping/clicking sounds. That slipping disc will not ever be corrected. If you don't have pain, you don't have to try to correct it because it can't be corrected unless you have surgery.

Surgery is a last resort if you have severe pain.

So, the goal here is to wear a night guard which reduces the popping to a minimum. Clenching and grinding makes it worse. So, when your jaw pops more, it is an indication that you are more stressed or clenching and/or grinding. So, be patient...reduce your tension, and wear a comfortable night guard to reduce the muscle contractions while you sleep.

Usually you won't need to have bite correction as the slipping disc actually causes a bad bite, but then that bad bite caused by the slipping disc can't be corrected...unless you get really radical with the bite modification
