Started having weird sensations after starting tmj appliance

by Kevin

Hi
I am a 27 year old male that was diagnosed with tmj.I started with chiropractor treatment and the chiropractor was so amazed and shocked at how out of balance my body was. I could not stand without support for more than a couple of minutes. The treatment relieved a little of pain but the tmj was still extremely effecting my everyday duty's. I have now started wearing a mouth splint that i got from a tmj specialist. I get this weird sensation that started from my head and they sometimes run down to my shoulders or even down to my feet. Is that normal?

Jaw muscle Jerk

My jaws are seeming to get better but i have noticed that after wearing the splint they sometimes jerk right above my ears. Could this be a sign that my jaws are starting to relax and work back in place? I have never had this sensation before. I can now chew my food a lot more comfortably than i could before.

Hi Kevin,

It sounds like you need to see your physician and/or a physical therapist. Rule out muscular conditions and work with a physical therapist.

Let me know how that goes.

Sincerely,

Dr. Spainhower

Weird Sensation
by: Anonymous

The guard i am wearing is for my top of mouth and it has a spacer that makes contact with two of my bottom teeth. It keeps me from biting down on my back teeth. The sensation i described don't really hurt but make me a little dizzy. Dr. Spainhower there was 2 months that i could not even walk without holding on to something. The only way i could is if i was wearing a neck brace. I often wonder if anyone has ever had this much trouble with tmj as i had. The muscle on the back of my neck only on the left side always feels swollen and hurts. When i do work by the end of the day i hurt worse than if i do nothing.

Hello Kevin,

I really can't comment on the feeling that you've mentioned. If it doesn't hurt then you're probably Ok.

I would recommend to start physical therapy to strengthen your body. Run, swim, racquet ball or anything that will work up a sweat and work out your upper body. Shovel snow, work construction, pull weeds in the summer. Start working your body to help align your muscles to work properly.

If you can describe your mouth TMJ appliance, I'd like to know what type of guard you are using.

Which teeth does it cover?
Is it for the upper or lower teeth?
which opposing teeth make contact with the guard.

Sincerely,

Dr. Spainhower
