splint recommendation

Hi, I am wanting to purchase a TMJ splint. At one time, I had a custom splint made that worked very well until dental work made the fit unsatisfactory. The splint was hard and had a "tab" at the front which prevented by bottom jaw from slide\ing back. My biggest symptom is my inability to sleep on the right side of my face without waking up with a horrible ear ache. This splint was effective in taking care of that. I am also noticing, thru yoga awareness, that my throat closes when my lower jaw slides back to it's "normal" position and only allows for shallow throat breathing. Any recommendations as to what splint might work would be greatly appreciated. I could also return to my TMJ specialist for another custom splint if you feel that is my best answer. I am a small person with a small mouth and narrow high arch. My jaw clicks and pops whenever I move my lower jaw forward. Thank you in advance for your time. Peggy

Hello Peggy,

As you have found out, the custom splint works well for you. That's good to know.

The RCM and the TMJ Appliance will be too big for smaller mouths. The SmartGuard is basically the other option to try if you wanted to go inexpensive. The SmartGuard has been working well for small mouths, contrary to what I have in my review(I need to modify my review about that).

However, the popping and clicking might be an issue. The SmartGuard may work, or it may not. It is a trial and error with any night guard...even custom made ones.

Sometimes even with my own patients, it can take 2,3 or more adjustments to find the right guard situation that works for the patient.

I would try the SmartGuard, if it doesn't aggravate your clicking jaw, then great, then it should work for you.

So, to summarize, Try the SmartGuard. I can refund your money if it doesn't work for you. If it doesn't work, then see your TMJ Dentist for a custom made guard.

Hope this helps.
