Night guard and Overbite

by Anita
(North Dakota)

My TMJ began when I was 16 and had severely impacted wisdom teeth chiseled out of my jaw. Decades later I took a blow to the jaw which caused a big flareup, but the last few months have been awful. I'm 60 now. It is hard to open my mouth, I am plagued with headaches, migraines and neck pain. I see a neurologist and a physical therapist for that. It flares up when I teach and talk or laugh a lot, and biting anything is out - strictly knife and fork for me these days. The dentist made an upper jaw night guard for me which caused intense pain within minutes. She wants to redo the guard, this time as a lower jaw guard, because she said my overbite is the problem. I can't tolerate a lot of stuff in my mouth, it makes me gag, so am having trouble with this whole guard concept. Any advice would be appreciated. Would your guard work in my case?

Upper or Lower night guard
by: Dr. Spainhower

Hello Anita,

People can wear an upper night guard or a lower night guard. It mostly depends upon how it is designed by the lab.

The problem with night guards made are that they can direct the jaw backwards...and that can cause a lot of pain. If the dentist wants to remake your night guard to go on your lower teeth, it just might work if the design is correct.

The SmartGuard Elite would work best for you having an overbite. It is designed to help better with overbites and jaw clicking, popping and lockjaw.

It's a trial and error with any night guard. Some designs work for some people and sometimes not. Even the SmartGuard may not work for some people, but you want to try a night guard designed with the highest chance to work...the SmartGuard is a great OTC guard that has the highest possibilities and highest probabilities to work and Not cause pain out of all OTC night guards.

It will even work better than many or most custom made night guards...but it just depends. Depends upon the shape of mouth and the design of night guard.

Good luck. Here is a link to purchase the SmartGuard if desired...http://www.simple-tmj-treatment.com/MouthguardsforTMJ.html

Sincerely,

Dr. Spainhower
