Hello Carley,

TMJ surgery should be the last resort to treat your TMJ issues. Surgery brings on compromises also.

The focus should be to look at all other factors associated at causing TMJ to reduce those factors and to control the symptoms.

Most often, treating TMJ is controling TMJ. Often it isn't just one thing causing TMJ symptoms.

As a Dentist, I always look at the bite, to evaluate whether or not the bite is causing the pains or symptoms.

Most often the bite is Not the primary factor causing the symptoms in my opinion, so we look at other environmental stressors. It will be different for everyone.

Recently i had to evaluate a TMJ sufferer for the causes of his TMJ pain. After months of modifying his habits and evaluating environmental stressors, only half of the pains were reduced. Then we identified that a growth back behind the last molars. That growth was removed and the TMJ pains went away.

So, TMJ really is looking at many many different possibilities of causes. If you have any questions for me, please reply to this comment or email me at...TMJ Spainhower at G mail dot com.
