How can I unlock my jaw without hurting my ears and jaw?

by Sarah Julia
(South carolina)

Sometimes when I eat, My jaw locks and then I can't chew anymore. I have no idea how to unlock it without hurting myself. I don't have a mouth guard, and I only eat soft foods now to make the pain stop. What should I do about this?

early morning lock jaw

Hello Bailee,

Before you see a dentist or oral surgeon, purchase one of the night guards...RCM Double arch or the SmartGuard Elite. Here is the information to purchase...

http://www.simple-tmj-treatment.com/MouthguardsforTMJ.html

The RCM double arch is best for severe locking at night time, but the SmartGuard is second best, and usually sufficient to relax the muscles for day time stresses and is more comfortable at night compared to the double arch. If you purchase the RCM double arch, I'll send you a SmartGuard Elite for free.

You can purchase one of these guards at this link...

How to unlock...a locked jaw
by: Dr. Spainhower

Hello Sarah,

Basically, the muscles are over worked and the meniscus/disc is doubled over preventing movement and you need to relax the muscles and allow as much relaxation as possible.

So, when your jaw is locked, you need to totally relax your jaw muscles. Do not allow your teeth to touch. Put your tongue in between your teeth if needed.

After a few minutes, the jaw will hopefully relax and release the lock. To minimize this, you really should purchase the right night guard.

The RCM double arch is best for severe locking at night time, but the SmartGuard is second best, and usually sufficient to relax the muscles for day time stresses and is more comfortable at night compared to the double arch.
