can improper balanced teeth cause tmj?

by arthur

My tmj started when i was chewing food as i was chewing i heard a click coming from my jaw with pain.i don't grind my teeth at night so I went to a oral surgeon and he confirmed that my teeth caused the tmj. I happen to have a cross bite so he refered me to a orthodontist to get braces. Will braces change my bite and help with tmj in my case?

Does bad bites cause TMJ?
by: Dr. Spainhower

Hello Arther,

Yes, a bad bite can cause TMJ.

However, don't jump to bite correction right away.

When I started my TMJ practice, my philosophy was that basically all or most TMJ was caused by a bad or off bite.

The truth is, that about 95% of us have bad bites, but not every one has TMJ. So, what does that tell us. It means that there are other factors that cause TMJ.

If you have clicking in your TMJ(s) for more than a month, then you will always have that clicking or slipping disc for the rest of your life.

So, don't correct your bite with hopes of stopping your clicking in the jaw. You can wear a night guard to relieve symptoms while you sleep and upon waking up, and the symptoms may be less during the day.

Try conservative therapies first...before braces or bite correction.

Let me know if you have any other questions.

Sincerely,

Dr. Spainhower
