Biting jaw or lips while using Bipap

by Debra
(Alex, ok)

I have ALS and use a Triology Bipap at night. I have lost muscles in my lips and can't keep my mouth closed, therefore I bite my lips and cheeks while I sleep. Would a mouth guard help?

ALS and mouth guards
by: Dr. Spainhower

Hello Debbie,

Wearing a night guard is a good choice to prevent biting on your lips and cheeks. A custom made night guard would work, but is expensive.

I have had 4 "sleep Apnea testers" try about 8 sleep apnea mouth guards that you can find on the internet. Most are poor, but the cheapest works Ok, and will prevent you from biting on your tissues.

I have found the mouthguards that work best for OTC guards. The first 2 are very simple and inexpensive.

The 3rd a bit different. it is the TMJ Appliance, but expensive. It doesn't mold to your teeth, but is placed in your mouth and sits there pulling your lower jaw slightly forward to help open your airway.

I would purchase the first one to see if it works for you. If not, then you can try the third. The third is purchased from this website, but buy the cheapest one first. That's the one I would try first.
