How Does Crepitus Affect The TMJ?

Update: I have recently found, purchased and wrote up reviews on two TMJ Exercise programs. They are similar TMJ Exercises that my TMJ Physical Therapist uses to treat my TMJ patients. Click here to read reviews on TMJ Exercise products.

Where did you hear the word Crepitus? I'm a bit surprised, but maybe your doctor told you, or maybe you heard it from a friend.

When joint noises are associated with TMJ, it really does not have much significance. It still is the crackling grating sort of joint noises in the Temporo Mandibular joint. You may hear it when you open and close your mouth, but mainly it's the Doc that is doing an exam that hears it as well.

Whether you have noises or not in the TMJ, it doesn't change the treatment plan usually. It is noted in your chart as a symptom to monitor whether or not it gets worse or better through out your treatment with your Doc.

Now, when the noises are associated with having pain in the TMJ, Your Doc will treat or recommend treatment for the pain, not the joint noises.

Only in rare instances when the noise is so loud, and when the patient just can't bare the joint noises, then Surgery may be recommended. Worse results or complications can occur through surgery, so hopefully you won't have to go that route.
